ABOUT THE COMPETITION

Where Africa’s Brightest Young Minds Compete to Solve Real-World Challenges.

The Young African AI Innovation Challenge is a premier nationwide tournament designed to test, elevate, and reward deep critical thinking. Young individuals or teams go head-to-head in a two-stage competitive pipeline to identify systemic community, health, education and agricultural problems, defend human-led solution frameworks before expert industry judges, and use AI strictly as an advanced prototyping tool to scale their winning concepts.

Human Reasoning First

Judged on root-cause research and original critical logic before tech is introduced.

Two-Stage Competitive Pipeline

A rigorous tournament structure moving teams from Regional Pitches to the Grand National Finale.

4 Multi-Sector Tracks

Teams compete across Sanitation, Energy, Agri, and Civic Infrastructure.

Responsible AI Prototyping

National finalists receive tech support and mentorship to build working physical/digital prototypes.

COMPETITION TRACKS

4 Real-World Innovation Tracks

Student teams select one core challenge domain. Every track requires deep field research, root-cause analysis, and human-led solution frameworks before AI is introduced to prototype and scale.

COMPETITION LEAGUES

Designed for Every Level of Innovation

YAIC is structured into age-appropriate divisions, allowing Junior and Senior High students across Africa to compete at their highest level of critical reasoning.

ENTRY LEVEL

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can register a school for YAIC?+

Anyone can register. Parents, patron teachers, headmasters, school administrators, or community advocates can complete the quick registration form directly on our online portal.

What happens if a parent registers on behalf of their child?+

Once a parent submits the online form, the YAIC team reaches out directly to the child’s school administration to brief leadership, onboard the institution, and schedule the program.

Does the school or teacher have to organize the internal competition?+

No. The YAIC team handles everything on the ground. We visit the school, guide student groups, introduce the problem-solving framework, and organize the school-level pitch competition to select the regional representative team.

Are there paper forms to download or intent forms to request?+

No paper forms or formal intent requests are required. Everything is completed through a simple form on our website platform, after which our team contacts you to handle all logistics.

Do students need prior coding or AI experience to join?+

No. Early competition stages focus strictly on “Natural Intelligence First”—evaluating pure human reasoning, field research, and root-cause problem solving. AI tools, technical training, and prototyping mentorship are provided to finalist teams in later stages.

What age groups and grade levels are eligible?+

The competition is open to students aged 10–18 currently enrolled in Junior High School (JHS) or Senior High School (SHS).

Is there a cost for schools or students to participate?+

No. Participation is structured to ensure full accessibility for all qualified public, private, and community schools, supported through our ecosystem sponsors and partners.
